THE DOOR AT DAWN

A VESPER ROOM STORY
🌙🗝️🦋
✦ I — THE WRONG TURN ✦
1
V E S P E R & S O N — B O O K S closed since 1931
You find the door the way everyone does — by taking a wrong turn on purpose. Past the bookshop that closed in 1931, down a stair that is always one step longer than you remember.
2
COAT CHECK no attendant. there never is.
Inside: a parlour where the clocks have politely stopped — each at a different hour, as if they'd all quit mid-argument. A coat-check with one coat. No attendant. There never is.
✦ II — THE PROPRIETOR'S BARGAIN ✦
3
🌙🗝️🦋 "Win my glim, little visitor, and I'll tell you what this place is."
The machine was warm, like an old dog hearing a familiar step. And from the corner where the light gave up trying, the Proprietor made the bargain he always makes. He keeps it, too. Eventually.
4
🌙🍒🗝️ not this time. the moths take note of every losing spin.
Spin after spin, the glim slipped away. But with every losing spin, another moth drifted down to watch from the brass. The moths take note. A full row means they attend the next one.
5
🦋🦋🦋 THREE MOTHS
And then — the reels breathed in. Moth. Moth. MOTH. The whole parlour went bright as a struck match, and every clock in the room ticked ONCE, together, and stopped again.
✦ III — WHAT THIS PLACE IS ✦

THE DOOR AT DAWN
The Proprietor kept his bargain, the way he always does. Eventually. He didn't say what the Room is — he opened the door and let the dawn say it instead. In your pocket: no glim, no trinkets. Only a small lantern that will not go out. And when you find the door again — and you do, you always do — the machine will already be warm.
UNTIL DAWN.
🦋 The moths will be waiting. They always are. 🦋
